Let me be totally honest — my makeup journey didn’t start smoothly.
I used to wonder how influencers made their skin look airbrushed while mine looked cakey by noon.
Over time, I picked up a few flawless makeup tips that completely changed the game.
And no, it’s not about expensive palettes — it’s about doing the simple things right.

Know Your Skin Type First
I can’t stress this enough — understanding your skin type is the first real step toward achieving a flawless base.
I made the mistake early on of choosing makeup just based on coverage and shade, without thinking about whether my skin was oily, dry, or somewhere in between.
That led to so many disasters — foundation sliding off my oily T-zone, or clinging to my dry patches and making them stand out even more.
Once I took the time to really assess my skin — I realized I had combination skin — I started using a matte primer on my oily areas and a hydrating formula on dry spots.
It instantly improved how my makeup applied and lasted.
Figuring out whether your skin is oily, dry, sensitive, or combination can completely change the products you use and how effective they are.

Skincare Prep Before Makeup
This was a total game-changer for me.
If your skin isn’t prepped properly, your makeup is basically doomed before you even start.
I used to skip moisturizer in a rush or apply foundation over a not-so-clean face, and I always wondered why it didn’t sit right.
Now, my routine is simple but effective: cleanse, moisturize, and apply a good primer.
Prepping your skin creates that smooth, even surface that foundation can grip onto.
Without this step, even the best products will fail you.
Once I made skincare a non-negotiable part of my makeup routine, my foundation stopped looking cakey, and my makeup started lasting all day.

Use Foundation That Matches Your Undertone
I spent years using foundation that matched my skin tone… almost.
The problem? It never looked quite right in natural light.
Once I learned about undertones — warm, cool, and neutral — everything changed.
I have a warm undertone, so foundations with a yellow or golden base work best for me.
Testing your shade along your jawline in natural daylight helps avoid that awkward face-to-neck mismatch.
Also, I used to over-apply foundation thinking more coverage would equal smoother skin.
Now, I apply it sparingly and build it up only where needed.
I blend using a damp sponge from the center of my face outward — it gives a skin-like, natural finish every time.

Conceal With Precision
This was a huge lesson. I used to load up on concealer thinking it would hide everything.
Instead, it creased and looked heavy. Now I know — less is more.
I apply a small amount only where needed (under the eyes, around the nose), and if my dark circles are bad, I use a peach color corrector first.
It balances out the blue/purple tones and lets me use way less concealer.
I tap it in gently with my ring finger and set it with the tiniest bit of powder — no creasing, no cake.

Lock It in With Setting Spray
I never believed in setting sprays until one summer wedding where my makeup literally melted.
Since then, I never skip this step.
After finishing my makeup, I give my face a few spritzes and let it air dry.
It helps blend all the makeup layers together and keeps my face looking fresh — even on sweaty, humid days.
This one product seriously changed how long my makeup lasts, and now I even carry a travel-sized one for touch-ups.
